What to Expect at Your First OB-GYN Visit During Pregnancy

Pregnant woman visit the Obgyn on clinic.

Finding out you're pregnant can bring a whole mix of emotions—joy, surprise, maybe even a little worry. It’s a big moment, and one of the first things most people do is schedule a visit with their OB-GYN. That first appointment can feel like a milestone all on its own.

If it’s your first time, you might be wondering what actually happens at that visit. Here's what it typically looks like, without any fluff—just a heads-up from folks who walk through this with patients every day.

It Starts with a Conversation

One of the most helpful parts of that first visit is just getting to talk. You’ll likely go over your general health, your medical and family history, and anything that might be important to your pregnancy.

At Noushin A. Firouzbakht, MD, PA, the providers make time to listen—really listen. This isn’t a rushed in-and-out kind of appointment. It’s about making sure you feel comfortable and heard from the start.

Some Basic Checks

You’ll probably have your vitals taken—things like weight, blood pressure, and temperature. There may be a pelvic exam and Pap smear if you haven’t had one in a while. Most folks also have a few blood tests done and leave a urine sample, just to check that everything looks good and rule out anything that might need a closer look.

Confirming the Pregnancy

Depending on how far along you are, your provider might use a Doppler to try and hear the baby’s heartbeat. Sometimes they’ll do an early ultrasound. That moment of seeing or hearing the baby for the first time can feel big—sometimes joyful, sometimes overwhelming, sometimes both.

And that’s okay.

Ask Whatever’s on Your Mind

This is the visit where you get to ask all the questions. What should I eat? Can I still exercise? What about that morning coffee or my skincare routine? No question is too small. This is all new for many people, and your provider is there to walk you through it, without judgment.

They may also give you a little info about what to expect in the coming months—how often you’ll be coming in, what signs to watch for, and maybe a few suggestions to make things more comfortable in the early weeks.

Looking Ahead

After this first appointment, you’ll usually come back about once a month during the first part of the pregnancy. As things move along, the visits get a little more frequent. It’s all about making sure you and the baby are both doing well—and that you have a space where questions and concerns can be brought up freely.

The care team at Noushin A. Firouzbakht, MD, PA in Fort Worth, TX includes multiple OB-GYNs who are focused on helping you feel cared for, not rushed. Whether this is your first pregnancy or your fourth, they’re here to walk with you—step by step.
